What it has instead is money, pride and a woman who is used to winning, and I enjoyed it more than I expected because it makes you wait. Both free episodes run under two minutes, so waiting is quick.

Before the beats, one warning in the spirit of honesty: if you open this series expecting skin, you will close it disappointed. It is a character piece wearing a cheating-plot costume, and the payoff, if there is one, is in the locked episodes.

Episode 1: a dinner that ends with a declined card

You are the best friend, and you never get a name. The setting is an upscale restaurant. Your friend Niko has brought his glamorous girlfriend, Dasha, and over dinner he confides the bad news: the business has folded and the money is draining away.

Dasha, meanwhile, treats the night as a showcase for her taste in luxury. When Niko heads off to settle the check, she turns to you and says looks are free, but she does not think you could afford her. Niko is no fun tonight, she adds, but maybe you are. You counter that, with you, a woman earns her luxuries, and the temperature at the table changes.

Then the check lands and Niko's card bounces. He is humiliated. You settle it without a fuss, and Niko calls you a lifesaver. Dasha remarks, with a smile aimed squarely at you, that Niko's friend turns out to be more fun than Niko. As the three of you leave she tells Niko the party is not over, and she asks you if you want to find out what she is worth.

Episode 2: a ride home and a very private wing

The second episode is a car ride. Niko, drained but grateful, calls you the best friend a man could ask for and thanks you again for the check. You say he would have done the same. Dasha shushes you both and delivers the line the series is built on: a real man does not chase. He lets you find out what you catch.

That is a power move wrapped in a compliment, and it is aimed straight at you, while her boyfriend sits one seat away. The car pulls up at the couple's luxury home. It is late, so Dasha says you should not drive. Niko, generous as ever, offers you any room you like.

Her closing suggestion is the guest wing: you will like it, she says, because it is so private. The clip stops on that sentence. It is the nearest this series comes to touching you in the free pair, and it lands harder than most explicit scenes I have watched.

What the pair gets right is restraint. Every beat is a negotiation about status: who pays, who flirts, who walks ahead and who follows. Because nobody touches anybody, each look and each line carries more weight than it would in a louder series, and that is the reason I would call this the most adult-feeling of the soft entries in this catalog.

How far does Old Friends, New Sins go after episode 2?

Three episodes remain, all locked, at 12 tokens each on candy.ai, so finishing costs 36 tokens. The series has five episodes in total. That puts it in the standard price bracket for a Candy character series, well below the 90 tokens of a creator series and the 156 of a 15-episode one.

• A man in financial free fall. Niko's business has collapsed, and a declined card at dinner proves it.
• A woman who needs a new plan. The official blurb says Dasha's lifestyle is threatened, and she turns toward his most reliable friend.
• A reversal of the chase. According to the blurb, his refusal to run after her reverses the hunt and drags her into a secret surrender. The free episodes show the refusal, not the surrender.

Why it scores heat 1

This is a 1, the Tease level, because the free pair contains flirtation and a loaded invitation and nothing else. No touching, no undressing and no sexual talk. I will not guess what the paid episodes show, since I only verified the two free ones, but the premise obviously points toward an affair.

Who's who in Old Friends, New Sins

Three people run the whole series, and money is the fourth character.

• You, the best friend: unnamed, calm and somehow always the person who stays composed while everyone else flusters. You pay the bill, and in doing so you become interesting.
• Niko: your friend, a man whose business has collapsed. Warm, trusting and tragically easy to deceive, he offers you the guest wing without a second thought.
• Dasha Vardosiva: Niko's girlfriend, glamorous and openly expensive. She is the Candy AI character on the series' cast button, and she is the reason to watch.

Dasha has no profile page on our site, so her cast button on candy.ai is the one place to find her. Free accounts on candy.ai are capped at five messages with her, which is enough to see whether her confidence works in text as well as on screen.

She is an invented Candy AI character, not a real performer's twin, so there is no creator page behind this series. Niko, for his part, is the sort of friend most of us have had: loyal, careless with money and not remotely suspicious of the person paying his bill. What the free subtitles establish about her is useful: she is used to men who chase, and the series is about what happens when one does not.

The pattern: if you like the power game more than the sex, stay with Old Friends, New Sins; if you want the same kind of affair with more heat, move to His Wife, His Rules. A wider list of betrayal stories is at best cheating series.

Should you watch Old Friends, New Sins?

Yes, if you like seduction that advances one sentence at a time, and you can live without sex in the free half. It is stylish, well paced for a two-minute clip, and cheap to finish at 36 tokens. It is also the mildest series in its group, so do not expect heat from the first two episodes. Watch them as a pilot: if the dinner scene and the car ride hold your attention, the other three are an inexpensive way to find out how the chase turns around.
