Harriet is the lead, in scrubs, and from the first minute she knows two things. The head nurse wants her gone, and the senior surgeon's eyes keep landing on her.

Episode 1: the one peaceful room on the ward

The last operation of the night wraps, the corridor empties and the building goes silent in the way hospitals do at that hour. The chief seizes the moment. He tells Harriet she will be working with him in the one peaceful room left, and he adds, almost as an observation, that her scrubs run a size small on her.

There is a deadline, which I love. A staffer reminds him that a note is due to the board by seven. His answer is to tell her to cancel it and to keep everyone away so he can go over charts. Notice what that does: it turns a hospital into a private room by issuing two administrative orders.

Harriet hesitates. He does not push. He adds that all she has to do is say stop. Whatever she says next, it is not that. The episode ends with her cursing, and in context the swearing is clearly not about the paperwork.

Episode 2: the door, the gossip and "don't stop"

The second episode picks up in the middle of the scene. Harriet apologizes for the language she used with him, and he tells her that he likes it. Then comes the line that explains everything: he says he chose her because she is not like Vanessa. That reframes the whole probation, and it tells you the head nurse is a rival as much as an obstacle.

The mismatch of names is deliberate. Harriet and Vanessa get first names, while the man with the power gets a title. In a series about hierarchy, that is the cleverest bit of writing in the free pair, because every time he is called "the chief" you hear the rank before the man.

Notice that the chief has no name. The series gives its power to a title, and the title does what a name would do: it tells you who he is without making him a person. If you like workplace power stories, the boss and office category collects them, and the massage and nurse category holds the medical-themed ones.

Is Under the Chief porn?

Should you watch Under the Chief?

Watch it if you want a hierarchy fantasy that starts hot and stays hot, with a hospital full of people close enough to hear; skip it if you need an act spelled out on screen. The pacing is sharp, the gossip outside the door is a clever device and the final plea makes a strong cliffhanger.

The weak spots are real. The subtitles hand you structure and sound but no detail, so if you want a series that tells you exactly what happens, this is too coy. And the chief is a blank: a title, a voice and an instinct for control, with no personality beyond power. I think that works in two minutes and might wear thin by episode 5, though I cannot judge that from the free pair.
