She tells you to come to her at moonrise and swears that a lord will be on his knees by dawn. A rider cuts in with a warning about the pursuit, just as she finishes. That's the episode: a promise, an appointment and a deadline, with your pride already half spent.

It's worth noticing how the witch frames the offer. She never promises that the lords will love you or that the crown will sit easily. She promises royalty, and what she asks for in return is your submission. That isn't a side effect of the deal. It is the deal, and she says so in the first scene.

Episode 2: the price

You go to her and ask what this costs. Her answer is wonderfully cold. Her fee is a night per lord who bends the knee, and five lords means five nights. She adds that she wants you, not your soul, which reads as a reassurance and a threat at once. If you refuse, the lord Haldan will mock your coronation and the crown will go to the queen regent's chosen heir.

Then the world pushes back in. A rider says the queen regent's searchers are combing the forest, and the witch's reaction is to give you an order: send your squire the wrong way, then come and find out what the crown really costs. She never raises her voice. She doesn't need to. She is a woman who has already priced you.

Why it works on me

Because the power is spelled out and the choice stays yours. Everything in the free pair is a conversation about terms, and the terms are explicit: nights in exchange for kneeling lords. No one touches anyone in these two episodes, and the subtitles show nothing physical. The heat is in the contract.

The delivery is the other half. Her voice stays level while your options narrow, and the knight's questions get shorter as the episode goes on. By the time he asks what it costs, he's already agreed, and she knows it.

The free pair does leave open a lot of mechanics. How does she make a lord kneel? What happens if five turns into four? Does the squire survive being sent the wrong way? None of that is answered before the lock, which is a decent trade for something that is free.

The wider cast sits in the background: two lords who have knelt, five who haven't, a squire and a rider who keeps bringing bad news.
